Recycled PVC in U.S. and Canada

2023 06/16

More than 1 billion pounds of PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) is recycled annually in the U.S. and Canada.

The PVC industry in the United States is actively working towards reducing plastic waste and has implemented a program to increase post-consumer recycling. Annually, over 1 billion pounds of vinyl are recycled in the United States and Canada, including 958 million pounds of pre-consumer vinyl materials and 142 million pounds of post-consumer vinyl materials. These estimates are based on a tri-annual survey of 140 PVC recyclers in the region, last completed in 2019. Totals exclude manufacturing scrap that is internally reused by the producer.

Post-consumer recycling of vinyl products has increased significantly.

After 2014, there has been a significant increase of 40% in post-consumer recycling. More and more PVC products are being recycled, with approximately 142 million pounds of consumer vinyl products being recycled annually.

The U.S. PVC industry is committed to diverting vinyl products from landfills. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, around 1.9 billion pounds of vinyl products are currently being landfilled in the U.S. The vinyl industry aims to increase the number of products diverted from landfills and into recycling streams. Resource efficiency and recycling are among the impact categories that the U.S. vinyl industry is addressing in its industry-wide sustainability initiative, known as +Vantage Vinyl.
